A Sunday stroll through Surry Hills in Sydney built up our appetite for our arrival at Bills. With no reservation we had to join the queue of diners for almost 30 minutes before being seated outside. (that’s us with the buggy out the front!) Living in the UK during the growth of Bill Granger we didn’t discover him and his recipes until more recent years and we liked his self-taught simple cooking philosophy.
The lunch menu has a combination of breakfast classics, soups, salads, pastas and sandwiches to handle the fussiest of eaters. I chose to try his Sweetcorn Fritters $21 served with bacon, roast tomato and spinach. The fritters were lightly cooked, not oily and the sweetness of the corn quite strong. the crispy bacon and tomato were a good accompaniment choice and the spinach was refreshing.
My hubby chose the Parmesan Crumbed Chicken Schnitzel $24.50 served with a spicy slaw salad. The two pieces of chicken were lightly coated in a crispy cheese crumb and cooked tender. The slaw had a hint of spice and also adding an interesting flavour to the palate.
For our son we ordered the Scrambled Organic Eggs $14.50 served on sourdough toast. The eggs were softly scrambled and very rich and creamy. The sourdough came with a thick wedge of butter and a small garnish of spinach greens.
Bill is open from 7am to 10pm, seven days a week. Drop by for great food and friendly staff.
