My hubby and I decided to celebrate our 7 year wedding anniversary by having dinner at Rockpool Bar and Grill, located within Crown Perth. We made our reservation a month before to ensure we’d have a booking as we’d not been able to get in on a previous occasion. Walking through the large double doors you enter a long romantically lit corridor with windows showcasing the meat refrigerator on one side and the wine cellar on the other. As you reach the end of the corridor glass doors automatically open and you enter the main restaurant to the sound of low-level conversation and dimmed mood lighting. We are promptly seated and handed menus which we drooled over. Although it’s only a Tuesday night it is fairly busy and during our meal our section is completely full.

For entrée I chose the Garlic Prawns $24 which were served in a little pot with a wedge of lemon and slice of bread. The prawns were perfectly cooked and there was a generous amount of them in the pot. The garlic was strong but not overbearing.

My hubby chose the Fennel Salad $24 with a large portion of buffalo mozzarella, roasted, pickled and marinated fennel with olive crumbs. It was beautifully presented on the plate and an interesting combination of flavours.

We both ordered the 36 month, 250g  Fillet Steak $55 cooked medium. It was served with a wedge of lemon and you could see the salt and pepper seasoning on top. Upon cutting through my steak, you could see how perfectly cooked it was with a pink middle section and it melted in my mouth. Definitely one of the best steaks I’ve ever had.

To accompany our steaks, we ordered the Baby Carrots $12Sauted Potatoes $10 and the Mac and Cheese $9 - we realised afterwards there wasn’t a green vegetable in sight! The carrots had been tossed in butter making them shiny and were sweet. The royal blue potatoes were cooked in waygu fat with rosemary and garlic making them crunchy on the outside but soft in the middle. Our mac and cheese was incredibly rich but truly noshlicious. We ordered it because we’d heard such great reviews about it and wanted to try it for ourselves – a decision we didn’t regret.

We knew we couldn’t fit in a dessert each so we decided to share my hubbys choice of Profiteroles $16 and order some Coffees $4. The profiteroles were stacked together and sandwiched with ice cream then topped with chocolate and hazelnuts. Our coffees were strong and were served with a little glass of caramel popcorn – it’s amazing how we could find room to eat a few of these!

Overall I enjoyed our evening at Rockpool Bar and Grill. Staff were attentive, friendly and paced our meal well so we were not rushed. The food was truly noshlicious but we felt the room although contemporary styled did not wow us with anything truly unique. It is a place we would visit again to celebrate special occasions or when we have a craving for some good steak…ok, you got me….and the mac and cheese!

*Apologies for the grainy pics – my camera does not perform well in dimly lit environments. Must get around to getting that new camera I’ve been talking about for ages!
