Elmar’s in the Valley

Having spent the morning at nearby Caversham Wildlife Park with some visitors from London, we decided to head to Elmar’s in the Valley for some lunch based on some good recommendations from friends. I hadn’t really thought it through as one of our visitors was German! Now Elmar’s had a lot of expectation to live up to. We didn’t have a booking and they were fully booked. As we began to leave staff quickly came over and informed us a table had just become available outside so we grabbed it. Although a little windy on this day, sitting outside on the verandah was perfect, views over the lawn and valley and live music set the scene for a lazy afternoon.

Theres a lot of choice on the menu to please most people. 2 of us ordered the Pork Schnitzel ($32.90). We had the option of fries or potato salad. I opted for the fries and our friend asked if she could have the side dish of potatoes (fried potatoes with onion and bacon) instead which was allowed. The schnitzel was large and incredibly thin, paper thin. At times it was dry and after a while this bothered me but it was served with a mushroom sauce and garden salad which helped. Our German friend thought it was most authentic especially with the wholemeal breadcrumbs.

So our German friend ordered the Kassler Smoked Pork Chop ($32.90) which was also served with a smoked pork sausage, German sauerkraut, royal blue mashed potato and red wine sauce. He was very impressed with the meal although he felt the sausage was more of Polish origin due to the grains in the sausage mixture.

My fussy hubby ordered the Chicken of the Day ($34.90), a pan-fried chicken breast on tenderstem broccolini, royal blue mash and mushrooms. He said the chicken was tender and juicy and the mash creamy.

We were rather full by the end so decided to skip dessert and head to the nearby Margaret River Chocolate Factory instead. Elmar’s is open for lunch Wednesday to Sunday and dinner Friday to Sunday nights. On weekends it is rather busy and bookings are recommended.
