Pickled Fig

Inside view

My first visit to one of the Fig cafes was catching up with a friend on Thursday night. The Pickled Fig in South Fremantle is one of three Fig Cafes across Perth and Thursday night is their Vego Feast Night. Each fig cafe has a different Vego feast night but meat lovers do not be put off as there are still a few meat options on the menu. The cafe is set very close to the beach with amazing views out across the ocean and at night we could see the lights of Rottnest and ships dotted along the horizon. There is a large alfresco area at the front but tonight it was rather chilly and we sat inside. I liked the eclectic interior design, funky seats and unusual lights. We were rather lucky to have a musician play the Sitar during our meal and although I wasn’t quick enough to take his photo before he finished for the evening, he informed me that he plays at all the figs on their Vego Feast Nights.

The menu has a good selection of vegetarian and gluten-free meals but tonight my friend and I were really taken by their chicken dish and although I felt bad ordering a meat dish on their Vego Feast night I was certainly not disappointed when the meal arrived. The Free Range Chicken ($32) had a pistachio stuffing and sat on top of a mound of sweet Potato Mash, Rocket then drizzled with a Pink Peppercorn Dressing. The juicy chicken and warm potatoes were filling but the rocket kept the meal light. The pink peppercorn dressing was subtle and had just the right amount drizzled so it was not swimming in dressing. We decided we had a little room for dessert and I noticed my favourite a Lemon Meringue tart ($7.00) from the Cookie Barrel and knew straight away this would be my choice. My friend ordered the Ricotta Plum and Blackberry Crumble Cake ($7.60) and said the large slice was rather delicious. Our coffees came with a little card advertising The Naked Fig hosting a Jazz and Dinner Charity Soiree event on the 28th April for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA with Cathrine Summers and the Sydney Quartet.

Overall we had a lovely night and we both said we’d visit again. The staff  were really friendly and attentive and the music made us very relaxed, a perfect start to the long weekend we both agreed!
