It’s Tuesday night and Siena’s in Leederville is absolutely packed. We’re beginning to regret not making a booking but luckily a table becomes free on the sidewalk and it’s ours. Our waiter quickly seats us, presents us with menus and dresses our table. Siena’s is a casual family friendly restaurant with several rooms and a covered outdoor area. It also has a glass walled kids room so children can play whilst parents finish their meals. They offer many specials such as a special lunch menu and their $12 Pizza, Pasta and $16 Parmigiana nights Monday to Wednesday which probably explains why they were so busy.
We have a quick look a their menu which offers a range of options and wondered whether having a large choice was actually easier or not when choosing your meal. We chose to start with a basket of Italian bread ($2) and added a pot of Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar (1.50). The bread had a crunchy crust and chewy middle. The oil and vinegar pot was quite deep so we found our bread was rather soaked in oil before we could even get to the vinegar.
I chose the Penne Pollo ($12) which was marinated chicken, mushrooms, roasted capsicum and roasted garlic in a cream sauce. It was a very generous portion, full of chicken and vegetables and the sauce just coated the pasta without it swimming in it. I have ordered this dish at Siena’s before and found it can be hit or miss but tonight it was good.
We also ordered the Chicken Parmigiano ($16) topped with sun-dried tomatoes and mozzarella cheese and served with chips and salad. Although the chicken was juicy the tomatoes had a bit too much oil making the chicken underneath a bit soggy.
Overall we felt the food portions were generous but the taste and quality somewhat basic. It’s an ideal venue for meeting up with a group of friends or a casual family dinner but I wouldn’t recommend it for first dates! Siena’s is great value for money on their specials nights (Mon-Wed) but if you’re thinking of visiting I suggest you book in advance to ensure you can get a table.
