Chez Dre

Street view

Hidden down a lane way across from the South Melbourne markets is Chez Dre, a very popular cafe with locals. Upon entering this cafe you could be fooled into thinking you have entered a small cosy cafe but instead you are welcomed into a large warehouse style cafe with the kitchen occupying one corner, the ‘L’ shaped dining area with the main counter in the middle (with an impressive array of desserts) and an outdoor courtyard at the far end. I like that the kitchen is open with side windows that allow you to watch the many busy chefs working as your meal is being prepared.

This morning was a family affair with my mum joining us for breakfast. Luckily we scored a seat before it became incredibly busy on this Sunday morning and before we left we overheard it would be an hour and a half wait for a table for 4!

The menu had a great range of options and when you’re hungry everything is appealing but eventually I settled for the Croque Madame ($13). The smoked ham and bechemal cheese where sandwiched between thick slabs of toasted bread then covered in gruyere cheese. Not to mention it was topped with a fried egg, which when gently touched with my fork, burst delicious golden yolk. It was served with crunchy sauteed potatoes which I greedily dunked in my egg yolk.

My mum ordered the Grand Petite Dejuener ($19.50). A plate of poached eggs on sourdough, bacon, spicy herb lamb sausages, potatoes, mushrooms, smashed avocado with goats cheese and tomato relish. This was a meal designed to keep you full all day long – which it did! I loved the flavour of the lamb sausage and the relish tasted homemade.

My hubby had a sweet craving so opted for the Sweet Crepes with Lemon Curd and Meringue ($10.50) – yes this was for breakfast! The light and fluffy crepes were drizzled with maple syrup,a mound of zesty lemon curd and randonly placed pieces of meringue. My hubby was still hungry after his crepes and tried to sneak bits of food from our plates to fill himself up.

Ohh almost forgot to mention the coffee – it was good, very, very good.
