In the east end of Flinders Lane you’ll find Cumulus Inc, home to Andrew McConnells food fame and winner of several awards. With large windows along the street allowing the morning sunlight to filter in, to the sophisticated designed interior and friendly attentive staff, we knew upon entering that we had found a gem of a place. We arrived early as bookings are not accepted (unless you need a table for 7-14 people) and found it was almost full already.
The breakfast menu is simple and well thought out. I chose the Shakshouka ($16), baked eggs, with roasted peppers and shanklish. Served in a pan, the shanklish packed a punch of flavour and the crusty foccacia was used to mop up any leftovers. It was a very rich and filling breakfast choice.
My hubby ordered the Kurabouta Leg Ham and Gruyere Toasted Sandwich with Tomato Relish ($16). With generous slices of ham and melted gruyere, this toasted sandwich kept hubby quiet for most of breakfast! He really liked the relish too.
My mum couldn’t decide between the Sardines or the Full English but finally settled on the Full English ($18). Many thick slabs of bacon, sat alongside fried eggs, smoked tomato and blood sausage on toast. Mum really enjoyed the blood sausage and the flavour on the smoked tomato.
We ordered the Toast with Spreads, Jams and Preserves ($8) for our son and it arrived with a plate of 3 very fruity jams and different toasts. He was happy munching away on his toast and drinking his babycino whilst watching his iPad.
Cumulus Inc is open Monday to Friday 7am to 11pm and on weekends 8am – 11pm but if you feel inspired to re-create some of their dishes at home you can purchase one of their cookbooks.
