You know how sometimes you accidentally find a place which you then fall in love with? Well this has to be the place for me. Hardware Societe is located in narrow Hardware St in inner Melbourne . We visited early on a Sunday morning (it was packed by 9am!), the last day of our holiday and were so disappointed we hadn’t come earlier as we would have visited many more times. The staff were very friendly and accommodating as we had arrived with our buggy and managed to find us a table out of the way. We were not aware it was cash only but staff were happy to let us know where the nearest atm was so we could pay after our meal. The inside has a sunny yellow theme and I loved the features such as the fresh bread cart and tea cups used on the walls as decoration. The kitchen is also open so diners can grab a glimpse of their meal being prepared.
The menu had a good selection of choices that would appeal to everyone. Finally I settled on the Scrambled Eggs $18 served with smoked bacon, isigny ste mere double brie and onion jam. It was all well presented on a wooden chopping board, the eggs in a mini frypan and the bacon and brie inside a crusty bread loaf. It was very rich and filling. The eggs were soft and creamy and the bread was crunchy. The smoked bacon warmed the brie making is sticky and truly noshtastic!
Hubby ordered the Omelette $16 served with saffron potatoes, confit tomatoes, persian feta and herbs. His omelette was light and fluffy and the potatoes made it extra filling. The feta softened from the warmth of the eggs and the tomato and herbs complemented the flavours perfectly.
We ordered a Flat White $3.50 and a Hot Chocolate, both served with a small warm cinnamon donut ball instead of the usual biscuit – yum! The coffee was strong and the hot chocolate came with a jug of chocolate milk to pour over cream and chocolate in the cup.
Hardware Societe also sells fresh bread, pastries and a whole cupboard full of tempting looking pantry ingredients.
I can’t highly recommend enough a visit to the Hardware Societe but go early or be prepared to queue for sometime. If only I lived in Melbourne I would visit more frequently – oh well theres something to look forward to for the next trip!
